A delegation from Strasbourg, France, reflects on the Christmas festivities in Bethlehem
In Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus Christ, Christmas celebrations are considered the greatest and most anticipated celebrations for the city, and the Christmas market is part of those celebrations for that, Bethlehem Municipality aims to revitalize its Christmas market, which today is limited to stalls selling foreign products, organized in partnership with consulates and cultural institutes. All profits are donated to local charities.
To this end, the cities of Bethlehem and Paris decided to share Strasbourg’s experience as the European Capital of Christmas, and the Strasbourg Christmas market is internationally renowned. In 2019, the Strasbourg Christmas market just celebrated its 450th anniversary.
A delegation made up of Renaud DE MALLIARD, director of the Christmas market, Philippe ARLAUD, artistic director and Laurent DELION, director of events, Julien CHIAPPONE-LUCCHESI, diplomatic advisor of Strasbourg and Elodie CUENCA, chief of the project of the cooperation Paris-Bethlehem visited Bethlehem from December 16 to 20, 2019.
The delegation studied not only the market but also the different festivities organized to celebrate Christmas in Bethlehem. Like everywhere else, the consumer dimension of Christmas is increasing: Santa Claus, fir trees, Scandinavian decorations, stereotypical cribs, magical parades, and other knick-knacks unrelated to local identity and culture.
It seems essential today to think about a « genuine » Christmas experience that Bethlehem could offer to its inhabitants, local visitors, pilgrims, and foreign tourists.
The Christmas market would be one of the components of this unique experience in the capital of the Nativity.
It aims at putting forward the identity and the specificities of Bethlehem and enhancing local production and know-how. The exchanges will focus on the 2020 celebration with animations around strong and unifying local symbols, such as the olive tree and peace or the wise men and human races.
